Bishop Fenwick seniors Allison Cifuentes, Natalies Cifuentes and junior Rachel Klasmeier helped the Cincinnati Mavericks Girls Water Polo Club take home the runner-up trophy at the 2022 state tournament over the weekend at Princeton High School.
The Mavericks started the state tournament with a 7-5 victory overThomas Worthington High School in the state semifinal match on Saturday, clinching a spot in the state championship on Sunday.
The Mavs faced perennial power Upper Arlington out of Columbus, Ohio, in the title match and fell 11-1. The Golden Bears' win on Sunday afternoon gave Upper Arlington its fourth-consecutive girls water polo state title and 20th state championship in program history.
Cincinnati Mavericks Head Coach, Elyse Spraul, was very happy with the fight her team showed at the tournament and is excited about the growth of water polo in the Sourthwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky areas. Spraul said, "My assistant coach, Johann Perera, and I could not be more proud of all their hard work. We hope to continue to grow water polo all over the Cincinnati, Dayton, and Fort Thomas (KY) areas."
The Mavericks were comprised of 14 girls from nine different Cincinnati area and Northern Kentucky schools such as Hughes, Mount Notre Dame, Ursuline Academy, St. Ursula, Little Miami, Lakota West, Beavercreek, Fenwick and Highlands (KY).
Now the Cifuentes sisters and Klasmeier turn their focus to the 2022-23 Fenwick Swimming season that started on Monday, October 31. Congratulations to Allison, Natalie and Rachel on a great weekend at the state tournament!
